Chelsea agrees to transfer Gallagher to Atletico Madrid

Chelsea agree to sell Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid for £33m after the England midfielder rejects a lucrative contract extension

Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of highly sought-after midfielder Conor Gallagher.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Gallagher has been strongly rumored to leave Chelsea this summer, with expectations that he might be sold earlier in the transfer window to help Chelsea comply with the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability rules before the June 30 deadline.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea has reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to transfer England international Gallagher for £33 million ($42 million). Previously this summer, Chelsea had accepted a higher offer from Aston Villa, but Gallagher declined that move.

DID YOU KNOW?

After the PSR deadline, Chelsea proposed a contract extension to Gallagher that would have made him one of the highest-paid midfielders at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old sought a longer-term deal than the two-year contract offered by Chelsea, which included an option for an additional year.

WHAT NEXT FOR GALLAGHER?

Gallagher has not yet agreed to terms with Atletico Madrid and will only do so if the conditions are favorable for him. Tottenham is interested in acquiring him, but he might also decide to let his contract, which expires in 2025, run its course.
