Manchester United initiate discussions with Fofana after exploring alternatives to Ugarte

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE BEGUN TRANSFER TALKS FOR YOUSSOUF FOFANA AFTER IDENTIFYING THE MONACO MIDFIELDER AS ONE OF FIVE POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES TO PSG'S MANUEL UGARTE

Manchester United are reportedly engaging in preliminary talks with Youssouf Fofana as part of their efforts to bolster their midfield this summer. According to Dharmesh Sheth from Sky Sports, the club has conducted exploratory discussions with the Monaco midfielder, who is among the candidates being considered for a new midfield signing.

United are actively working through a list of potential targets for the position, which includes Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. However, the asking price set by PSG for Ugarte is currently viewed as prohibitively high, prompting United to explore other options. In addition to Ugarte, the club is evaluating several other players: Richard Rios from Palmeiras, Sander Berge from Burnley, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, and Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina.

The motivation behind United's search for a new midfielder is linked to the potential departure of Scott McTominay. The Scotland international has been the subject of transfer speculation, with Fulham and Tottenham showing interest. Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, seems to be considering McTominay expendable, suggesting that the club may be preparing to part ways with him. Despite this, United is keen to ensure they are not left short in midfield and are looking for a capable replacement.

Fofana, who has been a key player for Monaco, is a full French international and has been with the Ligue 1 club since joining from Strasbourg in 2019. He has made a total of 175 appearances for Monaco and is contracted with the club until 2025. United’s search for midfield reinforcements comes as they prepare for the upcoming season, with their first match being against Fulham in the Premier League following their Community Shield clash against Manchester City this weekend.
