Sunderland's winger Bennette transfers to Ukraine

SUNDERLAND WINGER JEWISON BENNETTE HAS TRANSFERRED TO FC LNZ CHERKASY, A TEAM IN THE UKRAINIAN PREMIER LEAGUE, FOR AN UNDISCLOSED FEE

Sunderland AFC have confirmed the departure of winger Jewison Bennette, who has finalized a permanent transfer to Ukrainian Premier League club FC LNZ Cherkasy for an undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old Costa Rican international leaves the Black Cats after two seasons, during which he made 15 senior appearances and spent time on loan at Aris Thessaloniki in Greece.

Bennette, known for his pace and dribbling ability, joined Sunderland in 2022 from Costa Rican side Herediano but struggled to cement a regular starting role under multiple managers. His move to Cherkasy marks a fresh challenge in a league increasingly attracting young talent seeking competitive opportunities.

FC LNZ Cherkasy, newly promoted to Ukraine’s top flight, view Bennette as a key addition to their squad as they aim to establish themselves in the division. The club’s sporting director praised the winger’s “fearless attacking style and potential to thrive in European football.”

Sunderland’s decision to part ways with Bennette aligns with their strategy to streamline the squad ahead of the Championship season, freeing up resources for targeted reinforcements. Fans have wished the youngster luck, with many acknowledging his flashes of promise during limited opportunities.

The transfer fee remains confidential, though reports suggest the deal includes performance-based incentives and a sell-on clause for Sunderland. Bennette is expected to debut for Cherkasy in their league opener later this month.
