LAFC IS IN TALKS TO SIGN MIDFIELDER ANTOINE GRIEZMANN FROM ATLETICO MADRID
The 2022 MLS Cup champions are aiming to unite Griezmann with his former French teammates Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud, creating a formidable French connection in their squad.
LAFC are currently negotiating to acquire Atletico Madrid midfielder Antoine Griezmann, reinforcing their long-standing interest in the playmaker, according to a report by GiveMeSport. Griezmann's contract with Atletico Madrid is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, and he reportedly has a release clause of €10 million ($10.9 million) that can be activated this summer. Atletico Madrid, actively searching for a forward during this transfer window, are reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Manchester City's Julian Alvarez.
Griezmann has had a distinguished nearly 15-year professional career, during which he has scored 268 goals and provided 119 assists. His potential addition to LAFC would significantly enhance the team's attacking prowess. Currently, LAFC are performing well, just two points shy of the top spot in the Western Conference and six points away from securing the Supporters' Shield trophy. Griezmann has expressed a long-standing interest in moving to MLS, and last year he reiterated his desire to play in the United States: "Saudi Arabia? I understand those who go there for the incredible sums of money," Griezmann said. "Could I go? I have a family, three children. It’s not an easy decision to make. MLS is still my priority.”
If the deal goes through, Griezmann would join a strong French contingent at LAFC. The club signed former France national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in December 2023. Lloris has quickly established himself as a key player for the team, making 24 starts, recording 64 saves, and achieving a 68.1 save percentage. Additionally, Olivier Giroud joined LAFC in early May and, although he has yet to make his debut, his presence adds depth and experience to the squad.
The potential acquisition of Griezmann by LAFC underscores their ambition and intent to compete at the highest level. The MLS side remains consistently linked to a move for Griezmann, suggesting that he is their top target for this transfer window. Bringing in a player of Griezmann's caliber would not only boost LAFC's chances of success this season but also elevate the overall profile of the MLS, attracting more international stars to the league.
