Man Utd inquired about Barcelona's De Jong amid déjà vu transfer rumors.

MANCHESTER UNITED SEEKS BARGAIN DEAL FOR FRENKIE DE JONG, REKINDLING LONG-STANDING INTEREST IN BARCELONA MIDFIELDER

Manchester United have reportedly renewed their interest in signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona after reaching out to the Catalan club about the 27-year-old midfielder. According to Manchester World, the Red Devils have 'approached' Barcelona with an inquiry about the Dutch international. This comes after United's previous attempts to secure De Jong's services two years ago, which were unsuccessful. At that time, he was still with Ajax before making the move to Barcelona in 2019 for a substantial fee.

United's pursuit of strengthening their midfield has faced several setbacks this summer. They were unable to acquire Joao Neves, who joined Paris Saint-Germain instead, and their efforts to sign Manuel Ugarte from PSG are not progressing as hoped. Additionally, their interest in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad appears to be an unrealistic aspiration at this point. Despite these challenges, United remains interested in De Jong, though it is uncertain whether Barcelona would be willing to let him leave.

Since joining Barcelona for £65.3 million ($83 million) in 2019, De Jong has made a total of 213 appearances and scored 17 goals. During his time at the club, he has won one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana. However, Barcelona's domestic and European dominance has waned during this period.

As Manchester United considers their options, they are set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley this Saturday. Meanwhile, Barcelona will play against Monaco in a pre-season friendly on Monday, continuing their preparations for the upcoming season.
