Athletic Club star Nico Williams is reportedly nearing a decision about his future amid significant interest from Barcelona. This summer, Barcelona has made Williams their top transfer target as they look to enhance their squad for new manager Hansi Flick. Despite this strong interest, the future of the Spain international remains in flux. Athletic Club is keen on retaining Williams at San Mames for at least another season, but both the Basque club and Barcelona are currently uncertain about his final decision.
Catalan publication SPORT has indicated that while Williams has not yet made a definitive choice, he has decided against joining Paris Saint-Germain, who had also been pursuing him. Williams’ preference appears to be staying within La Liga, which leaves him with two possible options: remaining at Athletic Club or making the move to Barcelona. He aims to have his future settled before he begins pre-season training under new Athletic Club coach Ernesto Valverde.
In response to questions about Williams’ future earlier this week, Valverde remarked: "We are aware of Nico's talent and potential. The situation is evolving as new information surfaces daily. We should not base our decisions on media reports but rather on the actual developments." With La Liga set to kick off later this month, Athletic Club is scheduled to play against Getafe on August 15. The club hopes that Williams will make his decision before then, allowing them to finalize their preparations for the upcoming season.
