BAYERN MUNICH MONITORING BRIGHTON GOALKEEPER BART VERBRUGGEN – BUT MANUEL NEUER PLAN MAY PUT DUTCH STAR OFF
Bayern Munich has begun monitoring Bart Verbruggen, Brighton & Hove Albion’s young goalkeeper, as they prepare for life beyond their current number one, Manuel Neuer. Verbruggen, a promising Dutch talent who joined Brighton from Anderlecht for £16.3 million in the summer of 2023, has attracted attention due to his potential, despite experiencing some inconsistent form in the Premier League. At just 22, he has already made strides internationally, having earned caps for the Netherlands national team. However, his performances at Brighton have been mixed, with manager Roberto De Zerbi occasionally opting to start Jason Steele instead.
Bayern Munich’s search for a long-term successor to the aging Neuer is intensifying. Neuer, now 38, has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for over a decade, but the club is weighing whether to extend his contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
While Bayern continues to evaluate Verbruggen as a potential candidate, they are also considering other options, including Jonas Urbig, a young German keeper from FC Köln, and their own Alexander Nübel, who is currently on loan at Stuttgart. The uncertainty surrounding Neuer’s future, along with the competition from Nübel and Urbig, could complicate Verbruggen’s path to becoming the starting goalkeeper in Munich. He may fear that joining Bayern could mean being stuck in a rotational or backup role, as the club seeks to prolong Neuer’s career or integrate another successor.
Verbruggen’s current deal with Brighton runs until 2028, which could also complicate any potential move. Brighton is likely to demand a significant transfer fee for the Dutchman, especially given his young age and long contract. Bayern would need to weigh the financial and competitive implications of signing Verbruggen, considering the alternatives they already have in place.
For now, Bayern Munich continues to monitor the situation, but with the club balancing the futures of Neuer, Nübel, and possibly Urbig, any decision regarding Verbruggen's potential move is far from straightforward.
