Manchester United reduce Maguire's asking price by £20 million ahead of January transfer window

MAN UTD LOWER HARRY MAGUIRE'S ASKING PRICE WITH DEFENDER SET TO BE SOLD IN JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

Manchester United have reportedly reduced their asking price for Harry Maguire to around £10 million as they prepare to offload the defender in the January transfer window. Maguire, who was signed for a world-record fee for a defender (£80 million) in 2019, has struggled for form over recent seasons and has fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, with the manager preferring other defensive options like Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Despite being the club captain for a period under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire has seen limited playing time in recent campaigns, often due to a combination of injuries and the emergence of other defensive players. United were close to selling him to West Ham in the summer of 2023, but the move collapsed when Maguire refused a pay cut. Now, with his contract set to expire in 2025 (United have a one-year extension option), the club is keen to move him on to avoid losing him for free later on.

The decision to sell him at a reduced price also reflects United’s desire to revamp their squad and shift higher earners who are no longer central to Ten Hag’s plans. If they fail to secure a deal in January, United may trigger the contract extension and attempt to sell him next summer instead.
